Gresham College, London, UK

Gresham College was founded in 1597 and is currently situated in Barnard's Inn, Holborn, in London's legal district.

Gresham College does not have any students and does not offer any formal courses, but rather it holds "free public lectures which have been given for over 400 years, and to reinterpret the ‘new learning’ of Sir Thomas Gresham’s day in contemporary terms." It has eight permanent professors in the subjects of Astronomy, Geometry (Mathematics), Commerce, Law, Physic (Medicine), Rhetoric, Music and Divinity. The subject areas were those of major influence in Medieval and Renaissance England but have now been thoroughly brought up to date. Music, for example, was once seen as a branch of mathematics and part of the liberal arts quadrivium.

Although there is no exhibition centre for the casual visitor there are many free public lectures. Please see the Gresham College website for dates and full details. The website also has transcripts of past lectures as well as audio and video files for download.
